A4. Virtual Reality: The Future is Now – A Case Study and Example of Using Virtual Reality in eLearning with St. John Ambulance
The notion of “learner experience” has never been more relevant than it is today – yet over and over, training and development professionals either opt for, or they are encouraged to invest in safe, easily quantifiable modalities that tell the participant what their ‘takeaways’ will be, rather than letting the messages unravel through the experience itself. This presentation will propose that L&D needs to amplify the internal client experience, to keep up with external expectations – set through learning mediums and campaigns that are real, transparent and targeted.
Participants will enjoy a thought-provoking journey that will question some traditionally held perspectives of corporate training, culminating in the utilization of virtual reality – a medium historically deemed too expensive and impractical for wide-spread organizational use; and one whose application requires the reinvention of conventional design.
An example of how Pathways and St. John Ambulance created a virtual reality eLearning module to teach about what to do in a mass causality situation and how to prioritize injured patients for treatment, will be presented and explored.
